After taking a long break from the music business during which time band -leader Pat Sanders pursued other interests, in 2015 he decided to revamp his project. Now armed with a brand new line up, DRIFTING SUN completed the recording of their third opus entitled: ‘Trip The Life Fantastic’.
Originally released January 20th 2015, the album was a collection of pieces put together by keyboardist Pat, mostly new with a few older tunes included. The album was recorded in various studios across the UK and Canada, and mixed at Storey Studio – UK. The record took approximately a year and a half to complete.
‘Trip The Life Fantastic’ was the band’s 3rd studio work and with a fourteen-year gap between this and its predecessor, this must be seen as a comeback album of sorts, and with four new members on board, proof - if any were needed - that DRIFTING SUN was a labour of love for the band’s founding member and keyboardist Pat Sanders!
Like the earlier albums ‘Trip The Life Fantastic’ is an original and atypical album. The professional musicianship and production skills are obvious from the outset, but the driving arrangements, melodic as they are, can often be quite complex and need a few plays to hit home.
There are plenty of hard rock influences encompassed in the band’s music with powerful guitar solos flying here, there and everywhere, but much of what they do here is also keyboard driven, highlighted by beautiful melodic synthesizer passages that soar splendidly through spacious soundscapes, with Sander’s piano work particularly outstanding on several tracks.
Some tracks are quiet and reflective with sophisticated piano playing and dreamy guitars carrying the listener through atmospheric cinematic landscapes. Others are more exotic and experimental with hard-hitting instrumentation that can be breathtaking at times as the band forge forward with true rock backbone as guitars attack alongside thick organ textures, pulsating bass signatures and driving drum patterns. Pete Falconer has a mid-to high register voice that carries an extensive range, so prepare yourself to be challenged in that department.
On ‘Tripping The Life Fantastic’ DRIFTING SUN soar through a gamut of influences, but never deliver anything that is not absolutely unique, and as such, offered an album that can be discovered by fans of Prog Rock, Neo-Prog or Rock Metal!
